Email messages willnot download

I am working on Windows XP along with Office XP. In my
Outlook 2002 I can not get my messages to download. It
just hangs in the send/receive mood and then gives me a
timed out error. I don't have a clue as to what to do.

In Word 2002 my insert key does not allow me to type over
previous information.
