Email password not retained when closing Outlook

I have usewd Outlook 2002 for years. OS is Win XP Pro.

Since several weeks, Outlook will loose the passwords on all email
accounts, whenever the application is being closed.

I found a few similar cases, in particular the Protected Storage System
Provider registry entry (259416.KB). I tried it & it did not help.

It happened around the time I first used MS Office Tool 'Save My Settings
Wizard.'
I have used that wizard on another machine, no such mishap.

I have 'repaired' MS Office, I have uninstalled & reinstalled Outlook twice,
no change.

I have seen one case where MS help for pay found a solution, by switcing the
affected user to a new user account. That would not be practical for me.
Starting from scratch would be simpler.

I'd be appreciative of any suggestions.

Before posting, I did search & tried all I found, including the above..
Nevertheless, did it again, no change.

The specific point in my case is that the passwords are not retained when
Outlook is closed & then reopened.
