Email problem within Forms

SteveKMarshall

I'm hitting problems with the first forms I've produced with FP2003.

Basically they work fine if I'm sending the form to an email address hosted
on the same virtual server (not necessarily the same domain, but anything
with the same IP address), but I get an FrontPage error telling me to see
the server's system log if I try to send the form to any "off-server"
address. The form is sent (and received) OK, but this error comes up rather
than showing the Confirmation page.

Any thoughts anybody?

Thanks

And the server's system log says what?

Aaah! I was worried you were going to ask that. I haven't found how to
retrieve the system log yet and the help system is worse than useless. Any
clues? I'm on a Linux host.

My servers manager says that FrontPage doesn't create an error log as such
and has simply referred me to the system log - which doesn't show any errors
today, at or around the time the forms were tested and the problem detected.
I have full access to the FrontPage Administration of the virtual server,
plus the individual domains of course, but nowhere does this mention, much
less give access to any server log.

I've only ever attempted to send forms to domain addresses hosted on our
server before - not external mail. It's more or less the same problem as you
would get when using Matt's FormMail under CGI and not declaring the
recipient domain in script.

The log that should be seen is the Web Server log, NOT the System Event log.

Steve,
couldn't you set up an email address on your domain to receive the form
results and then put a forward on that address to the address you really
want the form results to go to?

Hi Kevin. Yes, I was referring to my Apache servers "Web Server error log" -
which shows NO errors during the period in which the form was tested.

Hi Jon

Yes, that's exactly what I have done, but workarounds leave too many loose
ends that can cause complications in the future, so I want to get to the
bottom of the problem. I imagine its a (good) security issue, but why is
there no information on it? Why is it so difficult to find out if and where
FrontPage has an error log and how to access it?

I really like many features of FP2003, but how will Microsoft ever get the
product used by designers if they hit problems every time they try anything
beyond hobby or kiddie sites?

Thanks for you input though

Steve

I would recommend moving to a windows server with the correct and up to date
extensions. I fooled around on UNIX machines with apache for about a year
till I "got wise" and haven't had one single problem since the switch.
