Hello,
I need to deal with the fact that the Email filter Rules that I setup
prevent me from connecting to a network (other than my company's
network with our Exchange Server) and fetch mail from a POP3 account
at an ISP. That is, my Outlook client fetches incoming mail by
requesting a download from our company's ISP. I have a bunch of Email
filter Rules that sort the mail into folders on my notebook, based
either on keywords or on receipient email address. As long as I am
attached to my company's network with the Exchange Sever the Rules
execute just fine. However, when I travel to a customer site and
attach to their network to get Internet access and then try to fetch
mail from the POP3 server at the ISP, I get two or three messages and
then Outlook hangs. From what I understand (and for reasons I don’t
understand) the Rules are always evaluated and processed on the
Exchange server and I suspect that since Outlook can’t find my
company's Exchange server it just hangs. I have noticed that the Rules
that are looking for messages directed to certain company email
addresses have been marked (in the list of Rules) as “Client Only”
which I understand means that they cannot be executed on the Server
and can only run on the client . The list of reasons that Outlook Help
gives for why a Rule will be marked as “Client Only” doesn’t include
what these rules do so I don’t know why they are marked that way. None
of the other Rules are marked this way in the Rules list. It seems
that if perhaps all the Rules could be set up as “Client Only” this
problem might be solved. Unfortunately, I can see no way to “force” a
Rule to be executed on the Client. To solve this problem, I have tried
going into the list (before I disconnect from the Exchange Server) and
un-checking all of the Rules in the Rules list. This used to work.
That is, if I un-checked all the Rules I could then attach to the
Internet through a customer’s network and Outlook could fetch POP3
mail. However, that approach no longer works (I don’t know what has
changed). This is obviously a huge problem since I effectively can’t
fetch my email while away from the office! There has to be a way to
deal with this but no one seems to have an answer.
Thank you,
Al
