Email Stopped working

Mr. Scott

I have Outlook 2002 on Microsoft XP. I am a pretty experienced computer user
and can usually fix issues like these on my own, but this one has me stumped.
I have triple checked my email server and password and all the other account
settings for Outlook. Then I triple checked them again. Nothing has changed
and I hadn't touched them since I set it up over a year ago. I have
Bellsouth DSL and my internet connection is working fine.

In fact I know the Bellsouth email server is working because I can check my
email on their website. It's all there but Outlook gets this error
immediately when I attempt to do a Send/Receive:

Task 'Bellsouth - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The
connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact
your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

The last email I got was Monday 8/22. The last thing I did with my computer
was install an update to the firewall (Zone Alarm) and that required a
restart, then I noticed my email was no longer functioning.

Zone Alarm may be blocking the port. Make sure Outlook is a trusted
application.

Good idea, but the firewall has been with me since day 1. I did check it
though and its not blocking access.

Thanks.

Turn off ZA and see what happens.

If you can send and receive now then it is a problem with ZA. Contact ZA.

Appreciate the help but its not Zone Alarm. I've turned it off, allowed all
access and I get the same error.

Anybody know what processes are assocaited with Outlook? Or any services? I
want to check if they are running.

In my experience, to truly disable ZA, you must modify the service to
"Manual" and then reboot.

Ok,

I have confirmed that ZA is not getting in the way. I had run multiple virus
scans and removal tools and found nothing. I used the spybot search and
destroy tool and it found a DSO Exploit and a bunch of webtracking cookies.
After removing these things and rebooting Outlook now began downloading 2
plus days of messages.

I don't really know what a DSO Exploit is but it did require some registry
changes. And I have run across them before but they never interuppted
Outlook. I'm not entirely sure they were the culprit in this case. I'm sure
the cookies were harmless though.

I appreciate the help. Thanks.

Okay, Okay, Ok, Ok. I'm a big man, I can admit it. I was wrong. As it turns
out it wasn't the DSO whatever thing, it was indeed, Zone Alarm. But it
wasn't blocking Outlook it was blocking ccapp.exe. Right after the next
reboot (when it started to work again) then it went back to NOT working after
I supposedly removed that DSO Exploit, which keeps coming back, but that is
another story.

The story here is, I should like really really do exactly what other people
suggest. I thought I was but not EXACTLY. I am not familiar with "ccapp.exe"
and how it relates to Outlook but once this program was allowed access, my
Outlook began downloading mail again.

Thanks again to those that suggested to really take out ZA from jump, I
apologize for my reluctance to get it right from the start. I will now change
my name and relocate to the mountains of North Carolina to save my family the
shame.

ccapp.exe is Symantec's Common Client application. It's part of NAV.

I also have the DSO issue, it has reappeared after several months of being
gone. I did a search at the Kim Komando site, she says it is a known issue
re: Outlook Express, nothing to worry about. They are working on it. It did
not appear for quite a while, now I just remove it using Spybot, but as you
say, it reappears. Hopefully it will be resolved soon.
