email vanishes on entering inbox - where is it ?

This has happened to me a few times now. An email appears in my inbox and
then within 2 seconds completely vanishes. It doesn't appear in any other
folder. How can I stop this from happening and how can I retrieve my lost
emails?

Rules or Folder Views?

This is almost always some rule moving the content to a subfolder or
somewhere else.
Or the view for the folder is set to show the messages based on a filter
such that your new messages do not meet the criteria.
