For the last few days I was facing problem in MS Outlook 2003. The symptoms
that I observe are:

I am able to receive and send emails.
It started with me being unable to see the mails in the reading pane. The
message in the reading pane read “ This item cannot be displayed in the
Reading Pane. Open the item to read its contents.
On double clicking the mail, the mail would not open and I would get a
dialogue box with the message “Can’t open this itemâ€.
At that time I could forward or reply to the mail by right clicking the mail
and selecting forward or reply. In the forward or reply, I would also read
the received mail and also open any attachments received with the mail.
However now, I am neither able to view the mail in the reading pane, nor
open the mail. When I try to forward or reply as before a dialogue box
opens with a message “Operation failedâ€.
I am able to view attachments by right clicking the mail and selecting view
attachment. I am even able to save the attachment.
I am able to open the calendar and the contact and view all the contents.
However, I am not able to save any changes or make additions.

To solve the above problem we tried following options:

Run scanpst.exe
Outlook opened in Safe mode.
Outlook / clean view
Outlook re-installed
Scanned for Viruses
Run online updates for MS office.

But the problem could not be solved. At the last I deleted Outlook folders
from Registry as and where available. Re-installed MS-office and deleted
outlook.pst file and created new one with single message (Well-come message
Auto Received) then I was able to view messages as I run Office Update again
I faced the same problem to view then I run System Restore and able to view
messages. I want to know that is there any problem in Office Update?
Presently I am not updating Office update. Please advice. Please also confirm
me that I should run Office Service pack 3 which has recently released.

I don't see where you've tried a new mail profile. Try one.
