I have made a few small sites for friends and now want to make a site where
I get paid. Someone told not to put the site owner's email address on his
site and hyperlink it. He said that the hyperlink won't work correctly most
of the time because everyone has different email software (AOL, Yahoo,
hotmail etc.). I am astonished because I use email addresses all the time
and the only trouble I seem to have is that ocassionaly I will click on a
hyperlink and nothing happens. However when I open Outlook the next time the
email address is saved ready to type in a meaasage and send it. Has anyone
else heard this and what can I do? Thank you.

It is correct that mailto type of links wont always work depending on
the Browser and/or the mail program.
It will however work for the majority of people.
If you want it to work for all, you must use a serverside solution.

Please tell me what a serverside solution might be. My host offers a lot of
options and I will contact them after you suggest one or more. I am hosted
on a Win server. Thanks.

On a WIN Server you probably have access to ASP, so use that to write
the form mail.

Thanks Jens but I don't know how to write ASP. Is this something I can ask
my host to do?

Your host may be able to provide you with some sample scripts. If you want
them to write it for you, you'll most likely have to pay extra for that. Do
you know what email components they offer?

I am not sure what they offer. I do know my sites are on a Windows 2003
Server. Do you know what email components I should ask for?

Ask them what Ecommerce or shopping cart services they support
- or easiest (if you don't want to learn any server side coding) is to get and use a Paypal account for online payments

email to the site owner. These are not ecommerce sites.
