Emails disappearing from folder in archive inbox

W

WSI

We had a user who had several "sent items" folders listed under her inbox in
Archive folders. (The reason she had several, is because she was copying the
folder down into Archive mailbox and had to rename ie - Sent items1, sent
items2...Each time she did this she had to create a new one)

We are implementing a new Archiving system, so last night I archived her
inbox to prepare for it. All of the emails that she had in those sent items
folders have disappeared. I have tried to recover deleted items but they are
not there, and aren't in any other folder I can find in the mailbox or
archive.

Does anyone know what may have caused these to disappear?

A note - to copy the sent items folder she would right click on sent items
in the favorites folder, copy the folder, then paste into the Archive
mailbox.

Running outlook 2003 -

Thanks a million for any help... she has promised not to hurt me yet but
will once she needs one of those - -

Describe exactly how you "archived" them. Archive PSTs are local files
(i.e., on the hard drive) and are generally not accessible to anyone but the
person using the PC.

Hi Brian -
Logged in as her on her computer, I hit File - Archive and selected her
mailbox. Since it was the 16th, I chose to archive everything before the 17th
so I would get her entire mailbox. After the archiving finished, I moved her
emails in the archive inbox back to the regular inbox.

Any help would be great - thanks Brian

But you didn't move the Sent Items, correct?

Correct -
Although I don't think it would have mattered, because she had the folders
listed under her inbox, not out as their own "sent items" folder.

Did you check the Modified date of the items in the folder on which you ran
autoarchive? Outlook doesn't use the Received date (unless it's the most
recent date on the item) and if she was copying them from an Exchange
mailbox to a PST, then the modified date could very well have changed to the
date when she copied it and, depending on your archive criteria, they could
have been too recent to be copied.

Hi Brian -
I will check that, I will not be back until Monday to do it though. I have a
question though. I understand how exchange uses the modified date, I don't
see how this would affect it if they are already in Archive? Just curious,
trying to think through this.
Will check and let you know - Thanks

Here's your original post:

This says to me that she's got a PST named "Archive" to which she COPIED the
data and that you later ran autoarchive on the "Archive" PST to create
possibly a third PST (because you don't mention what the autoarchive
destination is right now). When you examined the archive YOU created, the
data wasn't there. I was suggesting that its because the modified dates of
the original weren't old enough to have acted upon the copied messages.
