Emails sit in Outbox

I am using Outlook 2002, contained in Office XP. My outbound emails sit in
the Outbox until I hit the send / receive icon in the tool bar. I have "send
immediately when connected" checked under tools/options.email setup. They
used to go immediately, but no longer do. Has anyone found the solution to
this problem? Thanks.i
