embed drawing

We have just received new computers and most of us, not all, cannot double
click on embedded AutoCad drawings in MS Word to edit them. Any ideas. We
can't find any obvious differences between the setup of the few who can edit
and the majority who can't edit the embedded drawings

What happens when you double-click? If you get an error message,
what does it say exactly?

It says, "The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make
sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted,
moved or renamed." Also right clicking to try to convert the embedded
object comes up with an "unknown file" message and you can't convert it to
anything else. I have discovered that a few embedded AutoCad drawings will
open for edit when double clicked, but most do not. Am trying to figure out
what is common about the ones that will open for edit. Maybe it's the more
recent drawings. It's not only ones that were done in AutoCad 2005. Some on
these open, some won't, and some of the ones created in previous versions of
ACAD open and some won't. It's got me baffled.

Maybe a dumb question, but is AutoCad 2005 installed on the
computers that cannot open the embedded objects?

We cannot change any security settings. They are all controlled by the
"man". LOL. All the computers that are having difficulty opening the ACAD
dwgs have ACAD installed. (ACAD 2005)

Well, the error message you quoted is one of those that can be
caused by the Norton Antivirus Office Plugin. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=835404 "You receive a "File is
not available" error message when you try to open an Office
document" for more information. Disabling the NAV Office Plugin
doesn't hurt anything as long as you leave NAV AutoProtect
enabled. Live with the problem, or talk to "the man".
