embed images in Word Doc after the fact

We have a program that generates a word doc with some images.
However, the developers were flakey and didn't embed the images which
makes tranport of these docs a hideous mess.

Is there an external script that could be run unattended that would
embed linked images into an existing doc?

"Unattended" is always a lottery where Word is concerned. There's
simply no way to be sure any messages Word might come up with can be
suppressed.

Are these images in-line with the text or do they have text wrap
formatting applied? Which version of Word?
