Embed Visio Diagram in Word

Frank Lionette

I would very much like to be able to embed a single-page
Visio diagram directly into Word as a graphic, so that it
is visible in the Word document. Right now the only
solution I've found is to export as a PNF file and import
into word, but this does not retain the vector information
(which means it prints-out at poor quality, even at hi-
res).

Vector formats such as PS, EPS, and AI all result in
corrupted files after export from Visio. Word also will
not accept a PDF as anything except a hyperlink.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks.

Office 2000. Windows 2000.

Visio's own PS/EPS export filter is known to be flawed and buggy.
You'd be better off printing 'to file' to a PostScript printer driver.

If by "a PNF file" you mean a PNG file, then that is indeed a raster
image format, not a vector format.

There are two basic ways to do this.

First, create the Visio file and save it with a simple
name. You can save yourself much time and trouble if you
make sure that the object in Visio fits on our output
paper just like you will need it to when you drop it into
Word. So in portrait style it should be about 6" wide and
no more than 8" high. It is tidy style to use the GROUP
tool to make all of the drawing into a single Visio
object. There should be NOTHING ELSE in the Visio image.

On the Word menu bar, select insert. Select object.
There are two tabs: Create new and Create from File.

The simple method is to select Create from File and enter
the file name of your image. Word will open the visio
file and try to insert it at the cursor point in your
document.

The other method works well only with reasonably small
objects. On the "Create New" tab in the Insert>Object
window, scroll down and select Microsoft Visio Drawing.
Word will open a miniature Visio screen in your document.
Resize and position the empty screen. Then copy and paste
or drag and drop your "simple" Visio diagram from Visio
into Word.

Note that there are known bugs in this little exchange,
most of which have been fixed in Word 2002 and 2003. Good
luck.
