Embedded AutoCAD .dwg mysteriously converted to metafile

I am having a huge problem with Word 97 documents where multiple embedded AutoCAD drawings are somehow getting turned into metafile drawings in the document, rendering them un-openable in the parent AutoCAD program. I have no Idea how this happens (I don't even know how to intentionally do this

Does anyone know why this is happening or even how to intentionally convert OLE drawings to metafile drawings withing a word doc
