Embedded characters

I get some irregular happenings when editing my document & when I show
embedded characters - a random attack of square bullets appear in the
margin - i'm sure these are my problem

what are they and how to get rid?

Square bullets in the margin indicate that the paragraph is formatted as
'keep with next'.

Or "Keep lines together" or "Page break before" or "Suppress line numbers."
