Embedded Excel in Word - This object is corrupt or is no longer available

J

jstammer

I've searched the posts for a solution to this error but only come up
with the solution being disabling a plug-in in Norton Antivirus. We are
not using Norton Antivirus. Any ideas what else might be causing this
problem, or any ideas of how to recover an embedded Excel spreadsheet
that is corrupt or no longer available?

Thank you,
Jodi

Hi, jstammer. Search for the OFFICEAV.DLL file on your system (include
hidden and system files/folders). If you find it, note the directory
path where it is located. Close all open applications. From Windows,
click on Start | Run. In the Open dialog box, type the command
(including quotes):

regsvr32 -U "C:\<path>\OFFICEAV.DLL"

Replace <path> with the directory path for your OfficeAV.dll file.
Click on OK. You only have to run this command once (not every time you
restart your computer). You should get the message:
"DllUnregisterServer in C:\<path>\OfficeAV.dll succeeded."

If Norton AV was ever installed at one the computer then the DLL for
the macro virus scanner may still be functioning which is causing your
inability to edit embedded objects.

The DLL that provides the macro virus scanner is Officeav.dll. If you
use Windows Search and locate the file then the command will
unregister the DLL which will disable it. If you don't find
Officeav.dll then there is no need to run the command since it would
fail anyway.

Don't worry, the regsvr32 /u command will only function for the DLL
referenced in the command - it won't harm anything. :)

Thanks for the quick reply.

I did not find the file when I searched. Any other ideas what could be
causing the problem?

No, there is not a link. We're "required" to create our financial
statements this way...by embedding Excel spreadsheets. To get around
it, we've been saving a copy as a backup in case it becomes corrupt.

But I was hoping there was some easy answer to why it's happening and
how to avoid it without taking the extra steps.
