This is an update of my post 3 weeks ago. I bought a new
hp 5550 printer and reinstalled office but I still have
the same problem. I'm using win98 se and the tools
options parameters are "Drawing objects enabled, draft
output disabled" Any other suggestions are appreciated. asm

Word interrogates the printer driver far more closely than
some other apps.
This is almost certainly a printer driver issue. See if
there's an update.
If yours is an HP printer - start looking at

I see you bought another HP :-(
Checkout the drivers I suggested last time.

Thanx for the quick reply Graham. I did get the update
you suggested. The old printer is an 870cxi and the
latest update is 15Oct1999. Are there compatibility
problems with word 2002 and Hp? I would scrap word but
unfortunately, I'm stuck with it. Can you suggest a
printer that might work with embedded objects? asm

Microsoft and HP have had a few problems with printer drivers. Each blames
the other, but HP has quietly released some beta printer drivers that
address a number of issues, so one might be inclined to think the problem is
theirs

You are also using Windows 98. I don't know to what extent the 5000 series
drivers for Win 98 differs from current drivers, but you could explore the
print driver properties for parameters that may affect the results - in
particular the use of printer fonts rather than dowloaded fonts can be an
issue.

Did you also turn off "Picture Placeholders" in Tools | Options | View
tab?
