Embedded images in messages don't show

Hello all,
I have an interesting problem. One of my users sees in the messages body in
the preview pane and also when the message itself is open an empty square
with a small red x in the top left corner instead of the images.
It is not the standard "Right click to see images". The user does not see
any images.
Is it a bug/setting?
How can I change that?
