embedded objects in Word showing as red X

OS: Windows XP
Office: XP Professional

When one user tries to open a shared document with embedded objects he is
getting red X's where the object/graphic should be. This is not happening to
anyone else. We use roaming profiles and when I log on as him on a different
PC he is able to open the document just fine - it only happens on one PC. I
have checked Word settings (Tools>Options>Drawings, Uncheck Picture
Placeholders and Print>Drawing Objects) but it still doesn't work. He has the
same permissions to the document as everyone else in the office. Any
thoughts? This is very perplexing. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

How about other users on this machine? Do they see the same problems?

Right off-hand, I'd say it's a problem with the graphics card driver or maybe
the graphics acceleration (or a combination).

Thanks Cindy. I tried logging on as different users on his PC and the problem
happened with one user but not the other. You may be right that it is a
driver issue. Thanks for your help.

It wasn't the driver. Uninstalled/reinstalled but it still didn't work. By
chance, I discovered that if I give the user admin rights on the local
machine, then the document opens fine and all embedded/objects appear as
expected. If I remove the admin rights to the machine then the problem
persists. What could be causing this???

No idea. I'd try asking in the office.setup or word.setup.networking
newsgroup. I'd also see if the similar behavior occurs if you embed, say, a
Word document in an Excel spreadsheet. Also, see if double-clicking such an
object brings up an error message (try it in a copy of a document, in case it
ends up converting the embedded object to a picture), or has any other
effect. Also, test whether things are different if you start Windows in Safe
Mode.

This information could be useful in tracking down the problem (probably
configuration, in this case.)
