Embedded PDF objects

I have a word document containing embedded PDF document that probably was created on a windows machine. When the "package" is double-clicked the error "Word cannot locate the server application for object objects" appears. On a windows machine the PDF opens in acrobat reader.

Is it simply not possible to open this file on a mac or is there some way of extracting the embedded PDF?
I did try and embed a PDF on my mac to see if I could create a similar file but couldn't do that either.

Any help would be much appreciated

Sorry, due to a design restriction, Word 2008 can't handle embedded PDF
properly.

It appears that someone at Microsoft believes that if they withhold PDF
functionality, you will discard your Mac and buy a PC.

In the meantime, if you use Insert>PICTURE>From File... You can insert
selected pages of the PDF into a Word document.

When I Insert => Picture => From File, in order to keep the file size down I
both convert the PDF to jpg format and reduce the size using ImageWell, an
elegant and quick-to-use application. The controls allow you to specify the
file size with a precision that I haven't seen in any other application.

Is this the fact of any embedded file, or only pdf? I've a Word document with an embedded powerpoint file and nothing happens if I double-click on it. If I right-click and choose Presentation object-> Show I get "You can't edit Power Point 97-2003-presentation" message.
I use Word 2008.

Interesting the way you phrase that I don't seem to have a problem with
PDF insertion using either as Picture or as Object - in fact, they both work
in the same way. The problem, however, is two-fold:

Choosing the "As Icon" checkbox means absolutely nothing and once the PDF is
inserted *nothing* will open in in Reader or Preview.

As for PDFs inserted (either as icons or as objects) in WinWord,
double-clicking either produces the message "Word cannot locate the server
application for AcroExch.Document.7 objects". I have Reader 9 installed but
it should handle Reader 7 PDFs -- and does when they're opened in Finder.

I'm not done playing with this ;-)

Hi Bob:

It seems to be hard-coded to call out to QuickTime. QuickTime will ask
which "Page" you want to embed for a multi-page document. You can choose
only one.

Trying to use Insert>Object in OS 10.4 produces the dreaded File Conversion
dialog, which presumes that Word is simply unaware that Reader is installed.

On the PC, it's a simple OLE call to the handling application. But
Microsoft has not implemented OLE for Mac Office...

If you can get it to work, please write it up for the website: here's lotsa
folks that would like to get this working
