Embedded pics only show in print preview

I had a Word doc saved with a number of pictures I pasted in, the last time I looked it was fine. Now I just opened the file and all the pic show text like this instead of the picture itself; {EMBED MSPhotoEd.3 }

If however I go to print preview I can see the image. Any ideas what happend and how to get the image back? Thanks DW
