embedded pictures do not display in Word; display in excel & ppt

Embedded pictures (jpg & bmp) no longer display in Word2003 documents. Same
pictures display fine in Excel2003 and PowerPoint2003. Image will print from
Word2003, but does not display on the monitor?? It displays a rectangular
frame with a blank white "image". Image will display in Adobe photo editing
and also Windows Picture & Fax viewer. Problem started in the middle of
putting together a greeting card. Determined "old" Word2003 files with
embedded pictures also would not display.

I have rebooted twice; no help. I am contemplating doing a "repair" from
ControlPanel Add/Remove software to see if that helps.

Computer is up to date on security patches and anti-virus software &
definitions. Dell Pentium 4550 P4 2.53 GHz, 1 GB RAM, WinXPHomeSP3.
