Embedded PowerPoint slides in Word document suddenly disappear

I've been encountering a rather unusual (for me) situation lately. While
working on a Word document, the PowerPoint slides I've embedded suddenly
disappear and, in their place, the following error message appears: "Error!
Objects cannot be created from editing field codes." I can re-insert the
slides, but eventually they'll disappear too. Anyone have any ideas as to
why and how I can prevent this condition from occurring again?

Hi, mcerrone. What version of Word and Powerpoint? Does the problem persist
if in Word you click on Tools | Options | View | uncheck the "Picture
placeholders" box | OK?
