Embedding an archive file into Word for Mac

When I created an archive file (zip file extension) I intended to be
able to insert it a Word for Mac document, Upon going to Insert-Object
a listing of Microsoft apps are listed. I selected the "From File" at
the bottom of the pop up screen. Navigating to the appropriate file,
selecting it, and then selecting "Display as Icon" I selected insert.
An error message reading "The server application, source file, or item
can not be found. Make sure the application is properly installed, and
that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed." was returned. How can
I get this file to be embedded into this document that can be open and
read by both Mac and Windows users?

I don't believe you can... In order for an object (file) to be embeddable it
must be created by an OLE-compatible application. Compressed files don't
fall into that category as they may contain any variety of non-OLE
compatible objects.

It appears you'll have to either embed the other file in an uncompressed
form & display as icon, then compress the Word file if need be *or* send the
..zip file along with the .doc - if you do the latter you can still create a
Hyperlink to the other file in the Word doc.

It seems I am unable to embed any objects in Word.
My thought is that a series of "source file" files had not properly
installed.
Is there a way of denoting which files were installed at installation,
after installation is completed?

Thank you for your assistance thus far.

Hi Whatever Your Name Is...

I'm not sure what the issue is here: you should be able to embed anything
that is INSTALLED on your computer.

The "Server Application" must be installed and publish its ability to be a
server. When you embed in Word, Word notifies the operating system to call
the server application to start up and display the object.

The indication is that Word thinks your computer does not have installed the
server applications you need. For example, to embed an Adobe Illustrator
image, you must have Adobe Illustrator installed on your computer. If it's
not installed, Word will enable to to embed the file as a file, but not as
an editable "object".

So I would try removing all your preference files, as described here:
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DamagedPrefs.html

ALL members of the Microsoft Office suite must be stopped (quit, not
minimised) before you do this. Each of them will re-create its preferences
when it next starts.

Hope this helps
