Embedding not working

PP2003.
When I use Insert>Object to embed a file (I've tried Word, Excel and a
bitmap picture) into a PP one, either as a file or as an icon, I can click on
it in the construction window and the embedded file opens nicely. But if I
run the presentation and click on the links, it just moves to the next slide
or exits and won't open up and run the embedded item.
I can link to the files happily, the cursor hovering over the hyperlink item
(word or picture) turns into a hand and operates without objection, and
closing the item returns me to the presentation.
Am I missing a Tools>Options setting? What am I doing wrong?

You have to set an action animation to open the item. Right-click and choose
Custom Animation. In the Animation pane, click "Add Effect" and choose
Object Actions.

This will open the item when you click the mouse. If you want the item to
open when you click ON IT with the mouse, then follow these instructions to
