Embedding XL2007 => system much slower

I'm running Office 2007 on an 6 yr old laptop with P4 (2.8GHz), 512MB of
memory & XP sp3. When I embed a smallish (~20K) Excel spreadsheet in an
essentially empty Word document, my system gets VERY sluggish. Just the
embedding took 2 1/2 minutes. Seems to be independent of virus protection.

Is this expected behavior? Or is there something else going on?

Further experimentation suggests that the major source of delay is embedding
spreadsheet data in which there are graphics and/or applied themes and
styles. It is likely that it would be less frustrating to apply the "pretty"
once the data is embedded rather than while its in Excel.
