Embeded Objects

When I try to insert an embeded object I only see the following example
{EMBED Word.Picture.8} When I highlight the command and use
control+shift+F9 I see a blank picture frame. If I choose edit picture I can
see the picture. Closing the edit picture screen return me to a blank
picture frame. This occurs with all embeded objects. I cut and past a web
page but as before the embeded objects will not show. Any ideas please would
be gratefully received.

Tools > options > view > uncheck picture place holders.
Toggle the display with ALT+F9
