Emergency Operation on .xls

Hi Everyone,

We have an .xls file on a floppy (A:) that just will not open It tell
me

"movielist.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or yo
may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server th
document is stored on may not be responding."

The file is not "read-only" I checked under properties.
The security tab on the floppy is not the problem either.
Can a Floppy itself be designated read-only?

I changed the .xls to a .doc and opened it fine, but then i tried t
change it to .xls again and it wouldnt open.
The disc itself is not damaged as far as I can see. (otherwise i
wouldn't open as a .doc)
I've looked everywhere for a temp file or backup file using the Fin
"*.xls" But no luck.

Is there something else I can try?

Thank

The file may very well be damaged. You should NEVER attempt to open a file
on a floppy. You should copy to the HD and open from there. Try that. (If
it's not too late). It has to do with the way excel stores unseen backup
copies of the file

Well I tried to copy it but I get

"Cannot copy movielist.xls The system cannot read from the specifie
device."

I think I'm doomed

ok I tried that and it gives me
"Read default error reading drive a
abort,Retry,Fail

The disk itself seems to be fine. It's the file that seems corrupt.
Maybe someone placed it on a magnatized....something.....

Thanks for the suggestion though

When I change it back to a .xls file it cant open it. Is ther

From what I understand, once you open an Excel file in Word and save
it as a Word document, there is no way for Excel to deal with this
file. AFAIK, it's unsalvageable.

Here are some links that pretty much encapsulate possible solutions to
problematic files.
