When I receive e-mail in Entourage with an attachment with .eml extension it
will not open and brings up a "Welcome to Mail" window asking me to set up a
Mail account.. This is a new phenomenon since I was away for two weeks and my
grandchildren have access to the computer. Any ideas?

Drag a message to the desktop. Select the message and do a Get Info. Now
select to open with Entourage and then click on the Change All button.

You must not have Entourage set as your default application.

The preference to set the default email application is no longer in System
Preferences. Apple now requires you to make this setting in Safari or Mail
preferences. However, there are freeware applications you can use to set
preferences:

IC-Switch..... I like the feature where it puts a small icon in the menu bar
that allows you to toggle which application you want as default for email,
web, FTP etc. Quick and easy way to change default application for testing
purposes.

IC-Switch is a helper utility for Internet Config (hence the "IC" in its
name), for Mac OS X only. It allows you to change quickly and easily your
default emailer, FTP client, news and RSS readers and Web browser, simply by
choosing an item from a menu displayed in all applications.

RCDefaultApp... RCDefaultApp is a preference pane that allows a user to set
the default application used for various URL schemes, file extensions, file
types, and MIME types. MacOS X uses the extension and file type settings to
choose the application when opening a file in Finder, while Safari and other
applications use the URL and MIME type settings at other times for content
not related to a file (such as an unknown URL protocol, or a media stream).

More Internet...... More Internet is a System Preferences pane that uses
Internet Config to allow you to choose which applications are set as helpers
for internet protocols (i.e. which application will be chosen to handle
which URL.)

MISFOX (MIssing Internet Settings for X)....... MisFox will show all the
file mappings settings and the protocol helpers. You can inspect these
settings, but you can also edit, delete and create new items for these
settings. Protocol Helpers are used to find the right application to handle
certain internet protocol.

I'm having a similar problem with .eml files. I was sent files containing media contact information for my state. I can't get this information into Entourage, Outlook, or Outlook Express after repeated efforts on each application. I followed your advice (above) and still can't see the information. "Get Info" shows that the file is but 8 KB in size. I'm lost as to what to do next as the sender says the info is in the file but it appears empty to me other than the email's Header information.

Easiest way is to have them put the info into the message rather than
sending an attachment. Obviously they can open it to copy/paste the info.

8 KB is small, but more than an empty message.

Can you send the file to me off list. Select the message that was sent to
you containing the attachment. Under Message in the Menu bar select "Forward
as Attachment."

Send me an email:
