Emoticons - How to Avoid

T

Thomas

I hate emoticons. They do my head in. How can I delete all incoming
emails which contain emoticons? Any help will be much appreciated.

Well, you must be a fragile creature indeed if that's all it takes to drive
you to the brink of madness. I would include a 'wink' emoticon here but I
don't want to hurt you....

What version of Outlook do you use? You may be able to set it up to read all
messages in plain text only, but methods depend on the version. Always post
your version/mode/SP level of Outlook (help | about) when posting in
here....

Create a rule that looks in the body of the message for all the emoticons
you know and deletes the message.

Thanks for the response.

How do I actually write the rule? I can't figure out how to tell it to
look for even one single emoticon.

Also, the messages I really want to kill are the ones from poeple using
Incredimail, which inserts a picture at the foot of the email,
advertsing FREE Emoticons.

I spent a few hours trying to figure out how to delete such messages,
but could not solve it.

Cheers

Hey, thanks for the note, and especially for not including the wink (or
any other emoticon).

I think if we ever re-introduce burning at the stake, or hanging people
in chains, those with a liking for emoticons will get my vote for going
to the top of the hit list ;-)

Version of Outlook is 2002, running on XP 2002. Other details, I'm not
sure about, as system is in the office.

Regards

Tell the senders to stop sending you crapola. Or block their email. Also
block "friends" who send you FW: FW: FW: FW: WORLDS BEST LAWYER JOKE'S!!!!

Ah, but *you* did, just below. Now I have to have you eliminated. I've
decided to be very sensitive about these things too.

Like, putting them ahead of Pol Pot in the queue? Sounds a bit extreme.

I don't have OL2002 handy, but see if you can go to tools, options,
preferences, email options, and check the "read all messages in plain text".
Blunt force approach, but it will work. Or see my reply to your reply to
Brian.

Sorry, I couldn't resist it, and I just wondered if you'd pick up on
it.
check the "read all messages in plain text".

Hey, that's an excellent suggestion - just followed it, and it works
in Outlook Express v.6. I hope it works in Outlook 2002 as well. If it
does, sign me up for your fan club, and I'll buy your next book.
Kind regards

Thomas

Yes, the other one that bores me to death is "21 things about
men/women". I'm afraid that, in my benevolent opinion, those who
circulate such stuff present themselves as candidates for the bonfire.
Why use a Fawkes effigy, when we have such people around?

Incidentally, it may be said that Guy Fawkes was the only person ever
to enter parliament with honest intentions.

I'm sharp like that.

Just send me the cash, and I'll email you when I've found a publisher.

OL 2002 requires a registry change for that (or SlovakTech's Attachment
Options tool).

Start the Rules wizard, create a new, blank rule, and choose the "with
specific words in the body of the message". Make those specific words
":)", ":)", ";-)", etc.

I'll check out the tool that you mentioned. Is it something that you
use? Do you recommend it?

Cheers

I don't mind the ":)", ":)", ";-)" so much - it's the flashing
emoticons that bother me. They just distract the eyes from reading the
text of the message. Plus, I just think they look stupid - and I see
them as pointless. Maybe I lack humour. Who knows.
