Employee Vacation tracking

I'd like to hear what people use for vacation calendar / absense tracking at
the workplace. I need to implement somethine at work, and this is part of my
research. Even if you don't know the inner workings, it'd be nice if you
could describe what you know of it.

We need something to tally up total days taken off, so managers can track
usage. Addtionally, it would be nice to display read-only in a calendar view
to any employee to see when people will be gone.

I'm sure there's no limit on how to implement this, so I hope to see many
different ideas!

We all use Outlook 2002 or newer, no Exchange, Server 2003 domain. There
are ~50 users and may double in the coming years.

Perhaps because vacation, holidays, comp-time, over-time, and in-lieu all
represent financial assets owed or paid, my organization (~50 employees) has
assigned Payroll to track employee accrual and usage of those assets.
