Empty cells of data translated to a zero in a mail-merged document

We recently completed a mail merge to labels. We had trouble with one
variable. We use a multiple column system for zip code, where the 5-digit zip
code, the dash and the plus-4 code are in seperate columns. When the variable
data was merged to the final word document, all of the empty cells for one of
the plus-4 variables was translated to zeros, so we ended up with a 6-digit
zipcode on any label that would not have a plus-4 zip code. Has anyone had
something similar happen? Can anyone tell me why this happens? ...and know a
fix for the problem?

But given the arrangement of your data, you will need to modify the method.
