Empty Date field gives 12:00:00 AM

I am using Office XP and have been running into a problem
merging from Excel to Word. I have a table with
mergefields that comprise dates in one column. However,
if the date field is empty in my Excel file, then rather
than give me a blank space in that row, I am given the
time 12:00:00 AM. If there is date to merge into that
row, it works just fine, appearing as desired in the
correct format. To further confuse matters, the table has
9 rows, each row starts with a date column. This error
ONLY occurs in the first 3 rows. The other rows appear
blank as desired when the mergefields are empty. I have
given examples below of my table and the results..keep in
mind that rows 4, 5, and 6 are empty in excel and appear
correctly (i.e. they are blank. As this has plagued me
for 3 months now, I will gladly grovel at your feet
should you provide me with the cure. (In other words,
thank you very much for any and all assistance)
