Empty recycle bin returns error message in Outlook 2007

My recycle bin shows full in Outlook. When I try to empty it the program
returns an error message:
"The messasging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem
persists, restart Outlook"
I have checked the recycle bin on my desktop and it is empty.
