Enable Button/other to Apply "FilterByForm"

I have a form; I would like to let naive users
use "FilterByForm" without using the menus -- just buttons
on the form, or something similar.

I can put the buttons on the form; and clicking
on "FilterByForm" works; but then all the buttons are
disabled, so the "Apply Filter" button can't be clicked.

Is there some simple way around this? I could pop up
another form, I guess, but isn't there a more
straightforward way?
