"Enable Macros" pop-up upon opening Word 2002

John Sharber

For a couple of weeks now every time I open Word 2002 it
stops and asks me if I want to enable macros. The file
it is trying to open is c:\programfiles\microsoft
office\office10\startup\palmapp.dot. Why is it not going
to c:\documents and Settings\Application
Data\microsoft\templates\normal.dot?

Thank you.

Palmapp.dot is an add-in placed in the Office Startup folder by your Palm
Pilot. If it were in Word's Startup folder, you wouldn't be getting these
messages. Unfortunately, even if you tell Word 2002 to "Trust all installed
add-ins and templates" (Tools | Macro | Security: Trusted Sources), this
applies only to user and workgroup template folders and Word's Startup
folder, not the Office Startup folder. You will need to decide whether the
add-in adds functionality you need.

Suzanne,

Are there any differences in functionality if the same template or
macro file is placed in the Office startup folder, the Word
program startup folder, or the user's startup folder?

Placing it in the user's Startup folder would have unpredictable results
since that's primarily for executables (a shortcut to Word itself, for
example). My assumption is that the add-in is in the Office Startup folder
because it has application to, say, Excel as well as Word. Moving it to the
Word Startup folder would solve the immediate problem, but it might remove
Palm functionality in the other Office apps. I'm not familiar with the
add-in, so I couldn't say for sure what effect it might have.

Thank you, Suzanne, for the info. I do not want nor need
the palmapp.dot template. I don't do any transfer or
synchronization of Word docs to my Palm. Can you tell me
how I can get things back to normal? Thanks.

Just remove the add-in from the Office Startup folder.
