Enable Protected Mode

I just entered a detailed question on Outlook "Enable Protected Mode" but my
Vista IE7 crashed before I hit done. I have a new Dell XPS 420 with Vista
Untimate. "Enable Protected Mode" is at Tools/Options/Security/Security
Zones. The default settings are True for all excepted Trusted Sites. I do
not have this setting on my XP computer. I looked in Outlook Help but I
could not find any information. I am getting E-mail in Plain Text on my new
Vista computer that are HMTL on my old XP computer. I have tried to setup
Outlook identical on both computers. What is "Enable Protected Mode and why
is only on Outlook on my Vista computer?

I am VERY disappointed with my new Vista computer!!!!!

Download Firefox and use that instead.
It's faster, safer and works well with vista.
How does this non-grounded remark add to the original question?

You are disappointed with Vista because it provides IE Protected Mode?
IE7 on Windows XP doesn't provide Protected Mode.

As for your Plain Text issue;
Check Tools-> Trust Center-> Email Security and check the Plain Text option
If you have a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook, disable this
integration and try again.

Also, which mail account type are you using?
In which folder is the message being received?

Since you bought a Dell, also see http://www.msoutlook.info/question/20

Not an Outlook issue. This is an option for IE7 (under Windows
Vista).
I have a new Dell XPS 420 with Vista
Untimate. "Enable Protected Mode" is at

Sites.

So on your Vista host is where Protected Mode is available in IE7.
I do not have this setting on my XP computer.

Requirements: IE7 + Vista
I looked in Outlook Help but I could not find any information.

A feature of IE7 (on Vista). Not an Outlook feature.

http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?q=internet+explorer+windows+vista+protected+mode&mkt=en-US
I am getting E-mail in Plain Text on my new
Vista computer that are HMTL on my old XP computer. I have tried to
setup
Outlook identical on both computers.

You never identified WHICH version of Outlook that you use. Look for
a "always read messages in plain text" option in Outlook.
What is "Enable Protected Mode and why is only on Outlook
on my Vista computer?

Answered above. Again, not an Outlook issue or feature.
I am VERY disappointed with my new Vista computer!!!!!

So are many others, especially regarding application compatibility.

Additional Information from Bob in PGI:

My real problem is that e-mail on my Vista computer is in Plain Text while
the exact same e-mail on my XP computer is in HTML. I have tried to be sure
the Outlook settings are the same on both computers. The only difference is
Tools/Options/Security/Zone Settings/Enable Protective Mode; therefore I
titled my question “Enable Protective Modeâ€.

Tools/Options/Preferences/E-mail options/â€Read all standard mail in plain
text†is not checked.

I have Office Professional 2003 on my Vista and my XP computer.

I have POP/SMTP e-mail accounts. I connect to the internet by DSL.

I use McAfee VirusScan Plus. My anti-virus and my windows are updated
regularly.

As you are well aware a complex HTML e-mail in plain text is a real pain.
There is 4 pages of formatting for each line of real information.

Thank you for your help. If you have any other suggestions please let me
know.

My real problem is that e-mail on my Vista computer is in Plain Text
while
the exact same e-mail on my XP computer is in HTML.

Read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307594/en-us. This is for
OL2002. For OL2003, the "10.0" would get replaced with "11[.x]". I
don't have an OL2003 to check. See if this registry data item is
defined and, if so, what is its value. It is possible that Outlook is
set to NOT read in plain-text but you have some security or
anti-malware software that forces this mode. You could try restarting
Windows in its safe mode (with networking) to see is something you
load on startup of Windows is overriding the setup of Outlook.

Also, try starting Outlook in its safe mode ("outlook.exe /safe").
That will NOT load add-ons. Maybe an add-on, like your anti-virus
software (that has been enabled to do e-mail scanning), is
interferring with the rendering of HTML-formatted e-mails.

"a complex HTML e-mail in plain text is a real pain. There is 4 pages
of formatting for each line of real information."

Does that mean you actually see the HTML code in a plain-text *view*
of your HTML-formatted e-mails? That is different than just seeing a
plain-text only version of the e-mail (either because the HTML got
stripped out or because a plain-text MIME part was included in the
received e-mail and Outlook is showing only that part so it can show a
plain-text version).

Are you using Outlook in a domain where policies can be pushed when
you login, like forcing you to read in plain-text mode?

In Internet Explorer under its View menu, what encoding is selected?

Double-click an e-mail so it is opened (it its own window). Then look
under View -> Encoding.

Well, then, you're not receiving your messages in plain text, as you claim,
but as raw, unrendered HTML. Not the same thing.

There is an issue with Outlook 2003 on Vista that if you receive an HTML
message via Bcc, you will see the raw, unrendered HTML. Microsoft is trying
to typify the problem. If you could forward to me a copy of one of these
messages and a .msg attachment, I can pass it on to a Microsoft contact I
have. Include, if you will, a statement of whether or not you've configured
Otlook to use Word as the message reader.
