Enabling Macros ruins document

I was recently working on a document in compatibility mode and went to save
it. The option to enable macros appeared and I selected it. At this point
every character was transformed into a square (the default symbol for
unreadable text).

I'm not sure what macro could have caused this, but does anyone know of a
way to undo this?

A good start would be to open the document and see what macros it contains -
in particular an autoopen macro that would run when you allowed the macros.
