This one really has me puzzled, and the problem is not as obvious as it
sounds in the beginning, so please read this entire message, and thanks
in advance for your help!!
Using OL 2003, I send a message to a recipient, and the recipient says
the message appears "just fine." He replies, leaving my original message
at the bottom of his reply.
When I receive the reply, it also looks fine, but my original message (at
the bottom of his reply) has weird characters all over - in place of any
punctuation I used (apostrophes, quotes, etc.).
He looks in his "Sent mail" folder, and the message looks fine - there
are no problems like the ones I'm seeing in either his reply, or my
original portion of the message.
I reply to him (leaving both his reply, and my original message at the
bottom), and my reply is fine, as is his portion, but the original
message is "finally" displaying improperly on his end!!??
This back-and-forth can go-on ad-infinitim with the same results…
Everything I originated, which comes-back to me, is corrupted on both
ends from that point forward, but only after I've received it!!??
Now here's where it gets even "more strange." This happens with two
people in-particular, and the common thread is that they're both using
web-based mail programs, but from different providers (One is Yahoo! and
one is Earthlink).
When I try duplicating the same "experiment" with both, and they access
the exact same accounts via POP with Outlook, everything's fine (well, on
their end, it's "fine" either way).
So, the problem is not with their accounts, or with mine, and it doesn't
appear to be with their web-based mail systems (different companies, and
it's only MY portion of the messages this happens-to, and only after I
read them in replies)!!!???
To make things even more bizarre (as if that's possible), the same thing
happens regardless of whether they run their web-based mail systems in
text or HTML mode!!!!
To the obvious… I've tried every combination at my end of encoding… By
default, OL 2003 was set to "Western European (ISO)," and I tried
"Western European (Windows)," and both with and without "auto select
encoding" checked. I even tried "US-ASCII" encoding (after all I live in
the US, not Europe, it occurred to me) with the same results!!??
And regardless of the setting, everything is fine except, always, my
reading portions of an exchange in which everything is fine except what I
originated, and the moment that happens here, the "permutation" becomes
part of the message, and is visible to others.
Thanks for your patience, and any advice!!
P.S. This problem started happening when I installed Office 2003. I used
Office XP successfully with these two people for some time without this
problem.
