Encrypting .pst file in Outlook 2007

How do I enable "native" encryption for .PST file in Outlook 2007? I
know that I can use BitLocker or EFS, but I am wondering if there a
native function in Outlook that provides encryption?

Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, Outlook's default behavior when creating a PST file is
to use "compressible encryption". While this link is for Outlook 2003, the
options listed at the bottom will apply to Outlook 2007.

You know, I've often wondered about that. I don't think that has much to do
with privacy encryption because one can transfer any PST from one Outlook to
another and open it there without any keys.

Hi Brian,

Are you able to open the PST file without supplying the username/
password in Outlook after transferring it to a different computer?

Thanks

I moved the PST to my desktop, and I was able to open it in Outlook
without providing any password/decryption key. This is bad. :(

Outlook has no username or password.

Honestly, I don't know as I have never thought about asking contacts I know
inside Microsoft on whether or not "compressible encryptions" or "high
encryption" meets any industry/government standards. I'll add it to my list
of questions to ask.

PST files can be password protected.

Neo,

Thanks for the URL. That was very helpful. Do you know if the Outlook
2007 files is actually encrypted or is it just encoded?

Thanks

According to my contact, it would be encoded as the term was used before the
terms security and encryption where linked together. For what its worth, I
was told that option to pick "compressible encryption" and "high encryption"
has been removed from the product.

I wanted to see if it is possible to encrypt the PST without
installing any additional software on a already bloated desktop :)

There's no encryption built into Outlook, as far as I know, but neo has
promised to ask his contacts, as you already know.

That's unfortunate :(

So what kind of encoding does PST uses?

Thanks

He didn't say and I doubt I can get this info as the PST file format and
such is considered proprietary and not documented.

Even if you forget the password for the encrypted PST file, you can
still decrypt it by using Advanced Outlook Repair. Advanced Outlook
Repair can decrypt all the encrypted data and convert it into a new
PST file that doesn't require a password. You can visit
