Encryption

Hello All

I have a split frontend/backend A97 mdb. As part of the backup routine I
copy the backend onto a flash drive at the end of every day (and take that
home with me). In case I lose it, is there a way within Access 97 to encrypt
the data in the backend mdb prior to putting it on the flash drive, or do I
need to get some other encryption software?

There is a way to encrypt a database, but perhaps paradoxically it
would not prevent someone from using the data within MsAccess.
Encryption really only makes sense with the added Workgroup Security
in place (and you NOT having the MDW on the drive). But Workgroup
Security can be broken by any number of crackers on the internet, so
you can't rely on it. It is also an advanced topic you should not get
into until you download, read, and fully understand the security FAQ
from microsoft.com.
If you HAVE to stay with Access as your backend (rather than for
example the free SQL Server Express Edition), you may want to look
into PGP and similar products to encrypt the entire drive. When used
properly such systems even throw big government agencies for a loop.
