End Show in PPS

I have collection of 2001 Mac PowerPointShow files (pps) in kiosk mode.
Each PPS file has a button with an active setting of End Show, which is
supposed to close that show and permit the user to select another Show.
While this does close the active show, it prevents the user from
launching a second PPS show. PowerPoint seems to lock up here. In
order to launch another Show file, you first need to quit PowerPoint and
then reboot it. If the use presses the ESC key instead of the action
button, things work as they should. (This latter procedure is not
desirable since this kiosk is being set up with non-PowerPoint users in
mind).

Any work arounds for this?

Hi Joe,

A Google search turned up some things to consider.

It looks like there could be a conflict when an add-in is running. Adobe's
PDF maker add-in (automatically installed if you use Adobe Acrobat) seems to
be a culprit here.

Check Tools > Add-ins and see if there are any running that might want to
keep running once you close a presentation.

Would you be willing to use a Macro to end the presentation? That might be
worth testing.

Hi Jim,

This problem occurs despite Office 2001 Combo Update 9.0.4 being
installed on my G4 (OS9.2) Is there another update that corrects this?

I noticed that this problem also occurs with PowerPoint for OS 10.3 on a
G5 and PowerPoint 98 on OS 9.2, but that it does not occur on PowerPoint
2002 for Windows 2002.

Thanks for your continued help.

Hi Joe,

Have you installed the updates for PowerPoint 2001?

Hi Jim,

Sounds like a plausible conflict. While it might just be happenstance,
it's interesting to note that all the PowerMacs which experience this
problem have the full Acrobat application, while the Windows XP computer
(which doesn't have the problem) has only Acrobat Reader. Since this
project as about 200 pdf files embedded through all the slides, it's not
worth pursuing this avenue further.

I'm game at trying a macro "End Show," but have never done this. Can
you provide any assistance? Am I correct in recalling that macros might
not work on computers that have only a PPT Viewer?

Thanks,
Joe

That's correct; or to be more precise, it's guaranteed that macros won't work
when the presentation is viewed in the Viewer.

Hi Joe,

Macros will not work with the PPT viewer. They only work with complete
versions of PowerPoint.
