endless loop when trying to sync contacts and/or ical

my 3g iphone and my itouch just go into a loop (the display says syncing
contacts) when i try to sync contacts or my ical information. I left it this
way for 3 hours to see if it was just slow, but it flat out will not sync
either contacts or ical. It will however sink music. I spent an hour on the
phone with the mac guys and they could not get it to work.

Well are you even using Entourage at all?? (this is the Entourage
group).

The problem could be located at mutliple levels. Your phone syncs with
the Mac through iTunes. iTunes hits the Truth database where
SyncServices collect all the data for the sync. That's where the address
book and iCal data *live*.

If you are using Entourage, and are syncing with it, it simply uses
SyncServices as well to sync the data it has with the Truth.

The frozen sync you are experiencing could be an iPhone issue (something
is corrupted?), and iTunes issue, a SyncService (iTunes to Truth) issue,
a Truth issue or an Entourage issue (Entourage freezes syncing to the
Trith, effectively locking it).

Without additional information, it's hard to figure out where the
problem is.

Make sure everything is up to date (System, iTunes, Office) then use the
Disk Utility application to repair Permissions on your Mac and reboot.
If you are still experiencing the issue, you could launch the Console
application on your Mac and look for relevant entries that could help
figuring out what's wrong.
You can also use the Activity Monitor to identify frozen processes (in
red).

Thanks for the response. Yes I do use Entourage. Since I am having trouble
with a new itouch and and a new iphone, I will assume both devices are not
corrupted. All software is up to date. Also, i repaired the Permissions and
rebooted and I am still having the problem. I have copied the information
from console below. Lastly, I also tried the activity monitor and saw red.
Unfortunately the information is greek to me.

Last time I looked in Activity Monitor, it was all in English. RTFM. What
process was red?

Also, nothing in this log seems to be relevant, except that Afloat Agent
seems to be one of those insidious programs that infects everything on your
machine. Remove it and see if this helps.

Also, while the iphone and itouch are probably not "corrupt", they may very
well have broken software (or be interacting badly with sync). Apple's
track record with software hasn't been real good recently (think iPhone 3g
activations, MobileMe fiasco, etc.).

Afloat loads code in all applications, which makes it really tough to
figureout what's going wrong. It could be Afloat itself, of other
processes that are unrelated, but the console is unreadable because of
that. I agree: you shoud uninstall Afloat to see if the problem goes
away.
In any case, I didn't see any reference to SYncServices, the MS
SyncService daemon or Entourage itself.
