Endnote Bibliography

Hi, I was wondering if someone could please help me with a few problems. I'm a postgrad student trying to create a bibliography from my endnote file. I can insert an intext citation into my word document, but I can not create an bibliography in word from the endnotes that I have used. I go to "format bibliography" in words tools menu, but it brings up an option to "save as" the template. If I click save it still doesn't bring up the bibliography at the end of the document like I think it is meant to. If I click cancel, it says the style isn't there

I can not also find the settings so that when I do an intext citation it doesn't give the number it corresponds to in endnote

I don't know what to do, it would be great if someone could hel

These are all actually Endnote problems, I believe. Possibly your Endnote
Add-in has wigged out a bit, as Format Biblio should bring up the Endnote
Format Biblio dialog, not anything about save. Reinstalling the EN add-in
(CD has directions for doing it w/o reinstalling all of EN) might be a good
idea.

HOWEVER, before you do that, just to clarify the problem....

You have a Endnote library that catalogues your sources, and your in-text
citations are inserted from Endnote, right? (sorry, you wouldn't believe
how some people misunderstand these tools)

What do you mean by in-text citation? I tend to think in terms of an in-text
citation being (Reed 2001) and no numbers are used, because the bibliography
is organized like so
Reed. 2001.
Reed. 2003.
And people can go straight to Reed 2001 without needing a reference number,
endnotes are irrelevant, there are none. But I don't use citations like
that, so could be misunderstanding.

To do endnotes in Endnotes, you are supposed to insert the endnote yourself
in Word, then insert the EN citation field into the endnote space that Word
generates. Then Format Bibliography formats all the endnotes according to
the style set, and generates a bibliography at the end. But it doesn't do
anything to your main text, it leaves the endnote numbers that Word
generated.

Hi, sorry if I confused you, the program can be very difficult to use. I have an endnote library that I have set up, I can highlight one of my references and press control c. Then I can go to my word document and put the curser where I want to put the in text reference eg (Reed 2001) and press control v. That then puts in my in text references. What I meant by the numbers is that when I do the above it comes up (Reed 2001 #4). Which 4 is the number is corresponds to in endnote

However my main problem is that I can not format a bibliography. What I then do is go to tools - format bibliography and then format, that then brings up to save the template (if i press save it says "the author-dat was not found in the current styles folder) (if I press cancel then it says the same thing). It also brings up 'Microsoft Visual Basic, which I don't know what it is

I looked in the help folder in endnote and it said that for Xp users (which is me, and using endnote 7) "Note: To use Instant Formatting with Word XP, smart tags must be enabled (they are on by default). If Instant Formatting is not working, go to the Tools menu in Word XP and choose Auto Correct Options. Click on the Smart Tags tab. Select the check box titled "Label text with smart tags." In the list of Recognizers, make sure "Cwyw Citation Recognizer" is selected.

I could not find the Cwya Citation Recognizer so I selected "more smart tags". However I didn't see anything to do with Cwya...

You mentioned about reinstalling endnote, without doing the whole program. But my copy of endnote is on my university cd we were given and when it opens up it only gives me the option of installing the whole program

I really hope that this makes it a bit clearer about my situatio

Not a problem...

The EN reference number (e.g. Reed 2001 #4)--that #4 will vanish when you
managed to format your bibliography, so don't worry about it. But Instant
Formatting is not working for you, that's why it's appearing.

However, and sorry I didn't think of this before, because I'm actually on a
Mac and didn't pay much attention, I have a vague memory that Word XP
actually won't work with Endnote 7 completely. The Cite While You Write
add-in is actually a template that loads in Word and permits Instant
Formatting and accessing EN via Word to happen, and I think it's a bit wiggy
in XP. You would still be able to use EN by telling it to Scan a Paper, but
not necessarily the CWYW add-in.

Okay, I checked that on the EN listserv, and it is true--this is the link
someone gave for full info, but I wouldn't be surprised if EN has done a
patch by now. So check their site.
