I have a problem similar to that of "seferiad" (thread from 2002, see
below), but it has an additional complication. I'm a freelancer
editing a book, and the publisher requires that I track all the
changes so that the author can later see what I have done. The
in-house editor has requested that I delete some of the endnotes, and
as you already know in some circumstances Word 2002 doesn't readily
renumber and remove the dividers in the notes field.
I tried a suggestion I found on another newsgroup thread: to copy the
chapter and paste it into a fresh document. That worked fine for
renumbering the endnotes--but it would remove all the marking of
tracked changes (I tried printing out a page to check).
Is there any way I can meet both of the publisher's requirements?? I
did mark my document to display hidden text, as is suggested below.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Do you have nonprinting characters (including Hidden text) displayed?
This
makes it much easier to troubleshoot such issues.
