endnote in a text box

I am using Word 2000 and trying to put an endnote reference in
textbox, but the footnote/endnote option is greyed on the toolbar.

The nearest I have come to achieving a similar effect was to insert
cross-reference in the textbox to a hidden text endnote reference i
the adjoining text, but when I click on the reference in the texbox i
takes me to the endnote reference in the adjoining text, not to th
endnote text at the end of the document.

Any suggestions on how I can insert an endnote reference in the text
or simulate the effect in some other way

Try converting the text box to a frame.
