Here's what EndNote's support department says about the occasional bouts
of mad swapping that machines running Word.X & Endnote-7 sometimes
experience:
If you are not using Track Changes, then most likely the problems
you've run into are due to Office having corrupt preferences that
are exploited when using a program that takes advantage of Visual
Basic, which is what EndNote uses to communicate with Word.
Here's a list of common steps to recreate the damaged Word prefs
files, which sometimes cause crashes and problems with
Word/EndNote:
Close out of Word and open your Hardrive in Finder. Go to the
Office X folder, then to the Templates folder. There is a "Normal"
file in this folder, go ahead and trash it. This will recreate the
Normal file the next time you start Word, and may resolve the
problem.
Next, in Finder, go to Home->Library->Preferences->Microsoft, and
trash the "Carbon Registration Database", the "Office Registration
Cache X", and the "Word Settings (10)" files.
After that, go to Home->Library->Preferences->EndNote and remove
the "EndNote CWYW Prefs" file. After placing these files in your
trash, empty your trash, as Word may try to use them from the trash
instead of recreating them as it should.
Chances are, the above steps will resolve the Word problems you're
having.
How I wish Word and friends were not so flakey and did not depend on
crippled and dangerous code like Visual Basic!
