Endnote Renumbering

W

Walter Frisch

I am having problems getting Word 2002 to renumber endnotes
when the text has been edited. For instance, Word will not
"close up" the numbers when text with notes has been
deleted. I believe this problem may have to do with the
fact that in these files I tended to "track changes" for a
while. Word can't seem to "forget" that there were notes
that no longer exist--even if I stop (as I have) tracking
changes. I've tried all kinds of things to "trick" Word
into renumbering the notes correctly, but it doesn't work.
Thus, note 95 follows note 91, and they correspond
correctly to the references in the text--but there ARE no
notes 92-94 any more. They appear if I ask for "Final
Showing Markup", but I don't want them!

Any advice for a frustrated scholar?

You can't just stop tracking changes. You have to also accept all the
changes.

I don't quite understand this response. What do you mean
about accepting "all the changes"? Why would not the
deleted footnotes disappear if that is a change that I made?

The whole point of tracking changes is to be able to compare the original to
the revised version, so the "deleted" text is not really deleted until you
accept the changes.

OK, I think I understand you. How, then, does one "accept"
the changes? There are essentially four options on the
drop-down menu in Word: "Final," "Final Showing Markup,"
"Original," and "Original Showing Markup." If I go back to
the "Original Showing Markup," ask it NOT to track, then
delete the passages with old footnotes, should that do the
trick of renumbering correctly, and without gaps?

Thanks,

On the Reviewing toolbar there is a button with a check mark and the
ScreenTip "Accept Change." Click the arrow beside it and you'll get a menu,
on which you can choose "Accept All Changes in Document."
