endnotes and pagination mess

I am working with Microsoft Office 2004 on an iMac. I opened a new
document in Word and started typing. As I am using documentation
(academic writing) I inserted endnotes by using the Insert Footnote
command (changed to endnotes because I previously had problems on my
PC with many and lengthy footnotes messing up the pagination). All
seemed well until I had reached about 17 pages and roughly that many
endnotes. When I inserted another endnote the document started
repaginating, adding literally thousands of blank pages- from what I
can tell between the end of the text and the pages that contain the
endnotes.
I am a very basic user of the newer versions of word. I remember
typing my entire dissertation with hundred of pages and thousands of
notes without ever having a problem. That was in the early 90s and
Word was still very new and "primitive". I wish I could have it back.
I am completely lost and frustrated! Help, please.

Hi Angie:

It's a worry, isn't it :)

You have trashed the note field somehow (who knows how...) and it is now
corrupt, producing a corrupt paragraph.

That's what is causing the "paginate forever" bug.

The solution is to copy that paragraph out to TextEdit, then delete it.

Save the document, make sure the pagination has stopped (i.e. It *was* that
paragraph) then use Edit>Paste Special>Text Only to paste the paragraph back
in without the corrupt formatting.

Then you can re-insert the endnote, and all should be well.

Hope this helps

Hello,
I just encountered the paginate forever bug. I have copied the text out and back into a new document a few times already and my new files still have this bug. I have figures and special formatting in this (normally) 17 page document, is there any way to find out where the problem is so that I don't have to paste text only and reformat the whole thing AGAIN?
Thank you!

Hi Daria:

Daiya is correct: but it's the worst kind of corruption ‹ a corrupt
PARAGRAPH!!

Sorry, if a save to XML does not bring it right, you will need to do a
Binary Search :)

Sorry....
