Ends of lines and breaks

Hi everybody,
I have 2 questions this time around.

1. Is there a macro or technique somewhere out there that can find soft
returns on a line, like the macro that Microsoft has on its web site for
finding soft page breaks? I don't really know enough about macros yet to
figure out how to adapt it.

2. Is there a character code for inserting a no-width optional break? (These
are in "Special Characters" when you insert a symbol.) The only way I can see
to do it so far is to insert every one manually, and if you need to insert a
lot of them that's a real pain.

Any help on either of these things would be great.

I just realized I needed to be clearer--when I say soft returns, I don't mean
the character you insert yourself when you hit shift+enter. I mean the
character that Word inserts to wrap a line, whatever it is.

There isn't an end of line character, the end of line position is dynamic
and reliant on the margins and the printer driver. What is it that you are
trying to achieve?

Hi,
What I'm trying to do is record where the lines break. I know you can save
as text and tell it to insert line breaks, but all I want to do is show where
the lines break. Eventually I do want to save as text, but I need to have it
save with a paragraph per line, like it normally would when you save as text,
with some sort of marker to show where the lines would break on a page.

As an example, let's say a paragraph wrapped like this in Word:
This is a paragraph (end of line where Word wraps text)
in my document (end of paragraph)

I would want it to save like this in a text file:
This is a paragraph(marker)in my document

We have been here before. There is no end of line marker and the document
flow is determined by the factors already mentioned. The lines break where
you see them break on the screen at that given moment. Inserting anything
into the document will change that flow and alter the ends of lines.

Word is not a line or page based application. There are no lines and no
pages. If you want lines then you need a text based application with hard
returns or you need to physically add line breaks, which would make a
nonsense of the document formatting. You could however probably add a soft
return (Shift+Enter) at the end of each line either manually or with vba,
but that will add a lot of characters into the document which will affect
the text flow, and if you were to view this document (say on a PC with a
different printer driver), there is no gurarantee that the line ends will

What are you trying to show, to whom and for what purpose?
